  1. There are many reasons why the Southern Colonies had more land than the Northern Colonies. One is that there was more farming in the south than in the north. Therefore the farming colonies needed more land. Another reason is that the north was more industry than farming. Therefore the northern colonies needed less land. This was much like Civil War times. These are only some of the reasons the Southern Colonies had more land than the North.

  2. This is a responce to The area of the 13 colonies graph. The colonies to the north have less land because they were split up. To the south there was undiscovered land making more space for new colonies. The northern colonies probably had more rivers splitting them up into smaller colonies. Those are some thing about the area of the original 13 colonies.

  3. The southern colonies had more area than the northern colonies. This is probably because they needed more land for plantations. They grew plants to earn more money. Slaves helped them with their work so they needed fields for the workers to work on. The north wouldn't need as much land as the south because there were no slaves or workers to work on plantations.

  4. The southern colonies were larger than the northern colonies for many reasons. For instance, the southern colonies were discovered first, so they may have made them bigger because they were there before anyone else. Also, they may have needed more space for their plantations and farms. The north didn’t have many plantations or farms, so they didn’t need as much space. Plus, the southern states had more people so they needed more space. Also, the south was more open and wide. The north was squeezed into tiny New England, so the colonies couldn’t have been bigger than they were. That is why the southern colonies had more area.

  5. There are many reasons why The Southern Colonies are different from the Northern colonies. Things that were different between them were that the southern colonies had better climate, and better soil. So they grew more crops in the south. In the north they had to farm and had to hunt for food. In the south they had lots of Plantations which caused them to have more area than the northern colonies. In the North there were more industries and businesses. Those are the differences between the North and the South.

  6. In this graph, the northern colonies had more land than the colonies of the north, with the exception of Massachusetts. This could have been because of the placement of natural land borders, such as the Mississippi River. In areas like Connecticut, there are many rivers, which would allow for smaller divisions of land than in the south. Also, I think that this is because the early settlers of the north could have been unaware of the conditions of the areas that were farther inland. They may have wanted to stay closer to the ocean, where they were more familiar with the land, so they made their colonies smaller and close together in that area. The settlers of the south could have been more adventurous to spread out more, making their colonies larger. This could have been why the northern colonies were smaller than the southern colonies.

  7. I think that the southern colonies had so much more land for many reasons. One that much of the land was unsettled and could be claimed easily by any settler for their country. Another reason that they probably had much more land was because they had a lot of crops that they needed to grow. They grew plants which were their main source of trade and also the way that they fed themselves. Also the north was more industruis although farming awas a main source of living people also hunted and fished to get their food. That is why I think that the southern colonies has so much more land.

  8. By looking at this graph you can see that the southern colonies had more area than the northern colonies. There are a few reasons why the southern colonies had so much more area than the northern ones. One reason is because the southern colonies had more land, and better conditions for farming. The farms were large so that they could grow more crops and feed more people. The northern colonies had more businesses and cities, and focused more on getting food from the land, so they didn’t use as many farms. Those are the reasons why the southern colonies had more area than the northern colonies.

  9. This graph clearly shows how much larger the southern colonies were than the northern colonies. These states were most likely bigger because the South was made up mainly of large farms and plantations. Since the people were more spread out, larger states in the South could have similar populations to northern states. The colonies in the North were smaller because land was not as good for farming, so there were fewer plantations. Also, people lived closer to each other there because the northern states were focused more on religion and wanted to live near a church. So, the North didn’t need or want to have large states.

  10. The southern states had a larger area because they needed more land to farm. The south was an ideal place to farm because it had nice soil and it was warmer than the north. The farmers needed more land so they could plant more crops. The great amount of land would be perfect for the farmers. The northern states were not as large because they usually consisted of small towns and cities. Unlike the south, the soil was not good for farming here and it was much colder.

  11. Looking at this graph, I can see that the southern states had much more area than the northern states. I believe this is because the land in the south was much more suitable for farming. More room would be needed for large crops and plantations. The South’s economy mainly depended on cash crops at that time, so larger crops would equal more money. The North was more focused on industry, so it did not need as wide, open land. Also, another big part of the North’s economy came from fishing. So, the towns and cities would have to be on the coast. There would be no reason to go out farther from the shore, so everything would have to be squeezed into the narrow coastline.

  12. I can see in this graph that the southern colonies more land than the northern colonies. One Reason for this is because they were more into farming. Because they were more into farming, they needed more room to farm. The northern colonies did not need so much land because they were more into businesses and they did not need so much land for this. Because of this the northern colonies would not have the need for farms.

  13. I think the southern colonies had so much more area for a couple of reasons. First of all, in the north, there wasn’t as much room for the colonies to be as big. In the south, there was a lot of room for them to spread out and make their colonies larger. They also needed more land because they had plantations. They grew many crops and needed to spread out so they took up more land. On the other hand, in the north they had factories that didn’t take up as much room.

  14. I think that the southern colonies had more area because there was a lot of farm land in the southern colonies. In the southern colonies the climate was warm and had better conditions for growing crops. It was also a better place to grow crops because the land was more fertile then it was in the northern colonies. The colony lines must have been farther away from each other because in order to mass produce crops you need a lot of land and many wealthy farmers, most likely, didn’t want to have their land cut out because it was a different colony. Also, one of the colonies main exports was tobacco, and to grow and harvest tobacco you need a lot of land. I think that the northern colonies didn’t need as much land because to earn a living most of the colonists were fishers and lived off the water, not the land.~Sarah

  15. I think that the Southern Colonies had more area than the Northern colonies because it was warmer so more people lived there. The South had great land for growing crops and farming. This led to good profits and wealthier, happier people. The people of Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina made very good profits off of the tobacco grown in the fields. There were more people in N.C. than the S.C. because of the hot weather and the fertile land. Lastly, the Northern Colonies were closer to water so more products got shipped quicker.

  16. The southern colonies are much larger in area than the northern colonies. The only exception to this statement is the large area of Massachusetts. Massachusetts’s area was so large because it was one of the first settled colonies. The southern colonies had most of the larger areas because of the plantations located in the south. The soil in the south was much more fertile than in the north, and had many large plantations owned my single families. A plantation would need to be in one colony so the plantation would know which individual colony laws to follow.

  17. Overall, the Southern states had much more area than the Northern colonies. I think this is due to the numerous plantations and fields in the south and required more space. The South was known for growing an abundance number of crops and really needed the area in order to do so. I also think that the South needed more land because of the many cattle and animals that were produced there. This is what I concluded by looking at the bar graph.

  18. The Southern colonies probably had more land than the northern colonies because the south was not as developed as the north. It had many more plantations because of the rich soil and all of this farmland occupied a vast area of land. The north had many cities and towns and people owned less property. Also, there were more land boundries such as the appalaichin mountains and a multitude of rivers that offered many easy boundries between colonies. There were not as many of these geographical lines in the south. The southern states were just starting to be explored so those who chose to find this land had the choice of the size they wanted to make. Any settler would want as much land as possible in their possetion, so they made the southern colonies much larger than those in the north. Tyler

  19. There are several reasons that provide information as to why southern colonies are larger in area than northern colonies. One of these reasons is that the colonists originally landed in Virginia, a southern colony, and spread throughout the land. They did not want to leave Virginia, so they just simply spread the borders of colonies, because they did not want to leave the powerful colonists in Virginia. This shows why the southern colonies and now states are large, but the northern states are small for other reasons. When the Pilgrims came to America, they landed in the north, and because they did not have many people migrating, they only took up small amounts of space. Also, the Pilgrims were not traveling for territory; they were traveling for religious freedom. This made them not want to expand their space, and the north remained in small states.

  20. I think in this graph the Southern colonies have more land than the Northern colonies because when the Europeans first founded the colonies they were in the North. As more Europeans came over they divided the land they found into smaller sections. Then the traveled south and found more land. There they settled and made the rest of the colonies. Another reason why the southern colonies have more land is because in the Northern colonies the built small forts to keep out the Indians. So the Northern colonies have less land because they were founded first.

  21. I think the area of the southern colonies had more area than northern colonies for a few reasons. For example, I think the south had more land, so they had bigger colonies. Also, the northern colonies separated the land into smaller pieces. Another reason is because the first settlers from England landed in the northern part of the United States, and most of them stayed there. These examples show why I think the area in the southern colonies is greater than the northern colonies.

  22. As you can see from the graph, the southern states had much more area then the northern states with the exception of a couple states. I think the south had more area because it was mainly used for farming. If there were farms that means there had to be a lot of land. The north was smaller because there were very few farms and they had businesses that didn’t require much land.
